About Miss South
Each year the South Gwinnett High School Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) sponsors the “Miss South Gwinnett Scholarship Pageant.” Miss South is recognized as the student who best represents a young woman with admirable qualities and ideals.
The first pageant was held in 1962 when Linda Smith (now Mrs. Tony P. Jenkins) was selected as the reigning Miss South for the 1961-62 school year. In the spring of 1967, under the auspices of Sara Bramlett, the contest was named “Miss South Gwinnett Beauty Pageant.”
Prior to her death in June of 1970, the PTSA honored Mrs. Bramlett by creating the Sara Bramlett Award. This award is bestowed upon the contestant who is the most cooperative and has the best attitude about the pageant. This recipient is chosen by the pageant committee.
The pageant was moved to the fall in 1975 to give the reigning Miss South the privilege and opportunity of reigning during the school year from which she was selected. This was also the year that the name was changed to the “Miss South Gwinnett Pageant.”
In 1987, the name of the pageant was once again changed. This time it was renamed “The Miss South Gwinnett Scholarship Pageant” to reflect the educational scholarships which are now awarded to the contestants.
Through the scholarships which will be awarded, the PTSA helps to provide an opportunity for the contestants to continue their education after high school and to further develop their personality, self-confidence and poise. Therefore, whether or not they win the title, participants will have become more aware of their potential, and at the same time will have a lot of fun and develop new friendships.
